Population & Settlement Introduction

Today in our human geography class, Mr. Schick taught us things that he said would “hurt our brains”. First we looked at the pros and cons of globalization. There were a lot more cons on the chart then I would’ve expected. One of the pros is capitalism. People say that it’s just going to happen and there is no way to stop it. However, even though it benefits many countries, it is in no way beneficial to the poor countries. The theory is that globalization will help the poor countries catch up to the richer countries but it actually makes the poor countries even more poor then they already are. Globalization allows crises to escalate more quickly. In my opinion, even though some countries are suffering, globalization benefits the rest of the world greatly. The next “brain hurting” lesson was a little introduction on population and settlement. It was amazing to see how quickly the population has increased since the 1800s. However, it was a little frightening to think of what will happen when we run out of water.

Muslim Stereotypes

Today in our Human Geography class, we finished up the review of the test we took the other day. We looked at the last two answers which were the essay questions. The first question was about Socrates’ quote, “the unexamined life is not worth living”. We were asked to describe what that quote meant to us personally. The second essay question asked us to describe Socrates’ trial and death. In order to get 20 out of 20, we had to explain what he was accused of, the setting of his trial, his defense, and his forced suicide. When we were finished reviewing the test, we looked at a video that had strong points on the harsh stereotypes of Islamic people. I agree that Muslims have the stereotype of being angry, mean people who are usually terrorists. While there are Muslims who are evil terrorists, not all of them are like that.

Globalization Part 3

Today in our Human Geography class, we received an assigned seating arrangement, While I like my usual seat up in the front of the classroom, I think being in the back of the room will push me to work harder and pay more attention. Although, I didn’t appreciate my classmates talking, having staring contests, and distracting me from the assignment for today.
When we received our new seats, we were given the assignment to go back to the website we looked at yesterday, and jot down notes on the other vocabulary terms that related to globalization.
The first globalization related term was communication. In our day and time, we can communicate with people from practically anywhere through technology and media. In fact, we can communicate with people in other countries which is a way that cultures and customs are shared throughout the world.
Before all of our transportation technology, people would have to either sail by boat or walk by foot, which would take many days, to get where they needed to go. Now, traveling across countries is an effortless thing, which is how customs spread so quickly throughout different countries.
Popular culture was the next term on the website. Pop culture is globalized so much throughout the world. I know that some of my friends watch shows and read comics that originated in Japan. Also, I often see popular foreign foods here in America.

The final terms on the website included economy and politics. Both of these are widely globalized throughout the world as well as the other other terms we looked at.
